Booking Through Thursday Meme

This week’s topic: Let’s Review

This week’s question is suggested by Puss Reboots:

How much do reviews (good and bad) affect your choice of reading? If you see a bad review of a book you wanted to read, do you still read it? If you see a good review of a book you’re sure you won’t like, do you change your mind and give the book a try?

Good question! My answer is not very interesting, I’m afraid. I do read reviews, both at other reader blogs and also in the paper and online. If I see a bad review of a book, it will make me think twice about trying it. If I do try it, I will either check it out of the library or maybe pick it up for a low price at a library sale. I rarely buy books to read unless I know I will love them. And the same goes for reading them – I usually only read a book if I know the author or genre and I’m fairly sure it’s something I will like and enjoy. I’m afraid I’m not very adventurous with breaking out of my comfort zone and reading books that are not my “usual” type. 🙂

Happy Reading!

  1. Judy Said,

I like reading different things.. but I judge my “buys” more on if the blurb on the back and the book itself catches my attention, more than a review.

  2. Jaimie Said,

Borrowing books that you are unsure of is a good way to find some really good ones. Reviews might sway me to read a book but it rarely dissuades me unless there are alot of bad ones.

  3. gautami tripathy Said,

Better you than me! I do have my moments of madness buying books I never get around reading..:-)

  4. Heidi Said,

Not a boring answer at all. I really liked today’s question!

  5. Amy(The Sleepy Reader) Said,

I love blogger reviews but I don’t care much for literary reviews. I thought your answer was great!

    Happy Thursday!

  6. stephanie Said,

I think all the answers this week are interesting! I check out a lot of books from the library anyway. But if I want to read a book, I’ll read it regardless of a bad review.

  7. Lauren@Baseballs&Bows Said,

A good review might make me put the book on my TBR list. A bad review does have an effect if it is warning of language or other situations in the book. Otherwise, it might depend on what the reader didn’t like about the book. I do like to know what others think about books!

  8. Shawna Said,

I read a lot of books based on other people’s good reviews of them. If I see a bad one, then like you I think twice. If it’s something I’ve wanted to read for awhile, I may go ahead and read it unless the review says the content of the book is pretty bad.

  9. Brie Said,

The Library is always a safe choice when I’m not sure about a book. If I check it out and love it, then I can always go out and purchase it. But if I don’t like it, all I have to do is take it back to the library.

  10. Kara Said,

I rarely read reviews and will read just about anything regardless of what others have said about it. I must say I will move a highly recommended or well reviewed book toward the top of my pile, but that doesn’t mean much when the TBR pile is a deep as mine!

  11. marianne Said,

I have pretty eclectic tastes and read what sounds interesting to me regardless of reviews, though I do read them. I’ll read what others recommend, sometimes coming up with winners and other times slogging through something that I just wish would end – I have a terrible time not finishing a book I’ve paid for, whether it’s good or bad.
