Statistics

There was a widely bruited-about statistic reported last week, stating that 1 in 4 Americans did not read a single book last year. Clearly, we don’t fall into that category, but . . . how many of our friends do? Do you have friends/family who read as much as you do? Or are you the only person you know who has a serious reading habit?

I read this article in our local newspaper. I can’t say that I was surprised. With the advent of technology, and just how busy in general most people are, I was actually rather surprised that 3 in 4 Americans actually did read a book! Most people are either single parents, or dual-working parents, who barely have time to keep up with their lives and their kids lives. I know how lucky I am, that my situation allows me time to read and enjoy the things I like to do. I read a lot more than the average person. My sister Gail reads a lot, and my mother-in-law also reads a lot. I’m not sure that many other family members or friends read more than a handful of books a year. At least, none that I know of. I love to see people reading, and I love seeing a love of books instilled in children. We’re always really happy if we see or hear of our nieces and nephews getting read to, or learning to read when they get older.

Happy Reading, everyone!

  2. Gail Said,

I missed this article…..sad that people don’t read but I think everyone seems to be so busy these days that’s not something that’s high on the list. I don’t read nearly as much as you but I do think I’m lucky to be able to. Most of my kids like to read but don’t have as much time to do it…..except for that last one and he doesn’t like it at all!

  3. mamichelle Said,

My boys hate to read and I cannot figure out why. We’ve read to them since they were babies and dh and I were book-a-holics when they were younger.

DH doesn’t read much any more. He just zonks out like I sometimes do. I still keep trying though!

I’m on my9th? book this year, “The Memory Keepers Daughter.” It’s pretty good so far.

  4. Heidi Said,

I can’t think of anyone who hasn’t read a book in the last year.

  5. Lauren@Baseballs&Bows Said,

I wasn’t surprised! I know quite a few people who probably didn’t read a book last year !

  6. Debi Said,

I actually did find it surprising…most everyone I know is a pretty avid reader. Of course, like I said in my answer, I don’t really know that many people.

  7. Kim Said,

I don’t know many people who don’t read–I mean there a lot of fringe people I know who I don’t know well enough to know their reading habits. Does that make sense? But, I don’t know anyone who reads as much as I do–except maybe my daughter and her husband.
Interesting topic–maybe I will blog tonight about it?

Has your weather cooled down yet?!

  8. Kathie Said,

I really can´t imagine not reading. It is definitely one of my most favorite things to do.
    Enjoyed visiting your site.
    Blessings

  9. Melody Said,

My family don’t read, at least not as much as I do. And my friends are the same. However, I have a co-worker who reads, and that’s all I could think of…but of course I’m glad to know several blogger friends who are avid readers, that’s why I think book blogs are the best!!! 😛

  10. Chris Said,

Although 25% is supposed to shock us, I prefer to look at the glass half (well, 3/4) full. 75% ain’t not bad!

  11. Trish Said,

I love to read but don’t read that much.

I think I don’t have time, but on the other hand, I always seem to find time for the internet. Hmm.

  12. SarahJane Said,

I love to read, and I do attribute this partly to my mother’s love of reading. I think I would have been a little bookworm no matter what, though. I always have at least 2 or 3 books going at once in different ways (read-alouds with my husband, Bible study books, fun reading, etc)
I have so many friends that just don’t read – it’s so weird to me, because my life would be so different and so much less… full without books.

  13. Karen Said,

This was fun to think about and I had fun blogging about it today:)

  14. DawnK Said,

I belong to a book group, along with my best friend, so I know she reads and the other people in my book group read. My co-workers read. We are always talking about books. I know 2 of the doctors I work with read books regularly. My daughters read ALL the time and I’m always driving to the library. They are 18 and 15 and have always been bookworms.

My mom reads all the time. I just finished the 7th Harry Potter book, so I’m usually reading a book at any given time.

Who doesn’t read is my husband! Although he reads newspapers, message boards on the internet, and magazines. He’s just never been all that “booky.” Maybe out of the 4-person family, he is the one who didn’t read a “book.” LOL!
