We had a little bit of a low key day for Easter, which was probably good since the sickness has been abundant at our house lately. Daughter Elizabeth had her spring break last week, spent some time in Jackson and then got here on Thursday. She studied some, slept some and then helped me go through a few things from her closet… we ended up tossing a big garbage bag full of torn up kids books. She got the rest of them put back on the shelf neatly and we did the same thing in the boys closet. Chris came up to see her on Saturday and he spent the rest of the weekend with us. Son David decided late Saturday night that he would come for the day on Sunday. We couldn’t get my dad to come, not sure why he wouldn’t. Don thought he felt good enough to play golf; I said maybe 9 holes would be enough so he played 18 and then decided he should have quit at 9! No one wanted to dye eggs, no cute Easter baskets to take pictures of. So we snapped just a few shots before the boys left last night, but………..

It’s time once again for Katrina’s Spring Reading Challenge. I always enjoy participating in this one and can usually find so many ideas from other people for new books to read! Last year I kept seeing Wish You Well by David Baldacci on lists so I decided to read that one; it ended up being one of my favorite books I read last fall! Click on over to her place to read the guidelines and hopefully you’ll join in too. It’s fun and you’ll have a chance for a drawing at the end. This will run from now until June 19th.. Here are my books for this challenge:

Summer of the Midnight Sun
Under the Northern Lights
Whispers of Winter
all by Tracie Peterson & part of the Yukon Quest series
The Secret Life of Becky Miller by Sharon Hinck
Hidden History and
Ready to Wed both by Melody Carlson
With This Ring I’m Confused by Kristin Billerbeck
The Best Life Diet by Bob Greene

I tend to read fiction all the time and have to make myself read something else. I included one non-fiction and hope it will help me finish this book I’ve started several times before. If I do really good I’ll have to add another one later on that’s in a stack by my bed!
Happy reading, and I hope to visit lots of you to see what’s on your lists!

Usually about a week into March I remember what I don’t just love about this month……the wind! I used to always hear this saying about March; in like a lion, out like a lamb. It’s been no different this year than any other and the past couple of days it’s been just INCREDIBLY windy here. I don’t even know why I go to the trouble to comb my hair! This is when having it long enough for a ponytail would come in handy.
Hubby is starting to be better, thanks for all your kind words. I took him back to the doc on Monday for another xray. The xray looked better but the pneumonia wasn’t gone so he got a 3rd shot and more medicine! He was told he might could ride in his truck to work in a few days so he promptly left the next morning; what do you do with boys! He is sounding lots better though and is mostly just sitting in the office I think. His appetite is much improved and usually that’s a really good sign that he’s lots better.
If it’s not windy where you are, I’m coming to see you! I guess in another week it won’t be so bad. 🙂

oh what a beautiful day

I hope your day was as pretty as ours was here in the south….really nice out today! I walked this morning so that almost always makes my day better even though I still don’t love it. We spent several hours at the clinic again today for hubby to get another xray; he’s a little better the doc said but the pneumonia is not gone yet. He got yet another shot along with more medicine and said he might could go to work in a few days. I had to practically tie him down this morning to keep him from going to work!
And what makes a pretty day even better…..mail, that includes chocolate! A week or so ago Stacy (the other one) was having truffles week at her blog, giving away chocolate and a book! And I was one of the lucky recipients……….I just had to test these out too! Because if it’s chocolate and in my house it’s imperative that I try it. I thought you’d want to know that they taste good. 😆

Hope your week has gotten off to a good start. We’re watching a lot of tv and movies around here and that’s quite unusual for us but Don hasn’t felt like doing much else besides sleeping. In a few days I’ll probably be ready for him to go to work for a bit, especially if he gets cabin fever even more!

I spent yesterday afternoon at the clinic with hubby…….he got sick last weekend, tried to see a doctor on Monday but they were so busy they just never answered the phone. He went to work in TN and had a prescription for tamiflu called in to him there but by the time he got home he was feeling really bad with a cough that was just wearing him down. And I don’t love the waiting room because I always feel like I’m going to get sick from that! Our neighbor/friend who is a doctor was back home from a spring break trip; he checked him out and did xrays. Don has pneumonia in both lungs, ouch! He got 2 shots, lots of antibiotics and sent home to bed. And they told me to take the rest of the tamiflu medicine, so I hope that’s enough to keep me from getting it as well. I don’t feel very good either but maybe that’s just because I know he’s sick and I could get it! My mind plays tricks on me sometimes. I bought gatorade, drinks and soup stuff and I’m already tired from going up and down the stairs! He goes back Monday for another xray to make sure he’s getting better.
It’s cloudy here now after some rain moved through, I’m hoping it clears up later on. I might be mostly housebound this weekend! What are you doing that’s fun?

A couple of days ago I posted a movie quote meme and y’all have gotten almost all of the answers! You did good. 🙂 No one has guessed #2, “What did you do, wake up this morning and say, “Today, I’m going to ruin a man’s life?” That line comes from Romancing the Stone; a movie from 1984. I loved that movie, used to also watch it when it was rerun on tv. And the title I used that day, Let’s Go to the Movies, is a song from the movie Annie…….a real favorite of all girls around here for many years!
I had fun with this one, thanks everyone for playing along at my place and I thoroughly enjoyed guessing for the ones of you that posted quotes too!

My sis Stacy and her hubby Tim are the computer experts around here! I’ve been visiting them for a day or so, shopping is always on my agenda when I’m here! But I also forced talked Tim into helping me a little bit last night on working with gimp, which I’d downloaded to my computer. Last week I put up Katelyn’s picture in her pink boots; then my DIL Shanna told me that Ava Clair has the SAME pink boots! How fun. She sent me some pictures and wanted to see if I’d splice the 2 girls together into one pic….which I don’t really know how to do. So Tim showed me a few things and we fiddled around with the pictures for a while. My first attempts are pretty crude and maybe not what Shanna had in mind but I had fun working with it.

The background picture was taken by Stacy and was a really good one of a trail out in the woods; thanks Stacy for letting me use it as a background for little girls with their pink boots!
And thanks Tim, the computer wizard!

I saw this meme at Lauren’s and Karen’s last night, missed getting to play so I knew I had to play along by posting one of my own! I’m having a hard time picking just 10 movies though.

Here are the rules:

1. Pick 10 of your favorite movies.
2. Go to IMDb and find a quote from each movie.
3. Post them here for everyone to guess (if you know them all, please don’t guess every one).
4. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it and the movie.
5. No Googling or IMDb-ing. That’s cheating, and that’s no fun!

Here are my quotes:

1. “Oh Dexter you’re not doing it just to soften the blow?”

Here’s another from this movie: I’ve made a terrible fool of myself – which isn’t unusual. And my fiancee, my fiancee that was, that is, he thinks we’d better call it a day. And I quite agree with him.
The Philadelphia Story, first guessed by Tammy

*2. “What did you do, wake up this morning and say, “Today, I’m going to ruin a man’s life?”
and…….. Joanie, you are now a world-class hopeless romantic.
and………….. Now I ain’t cheap, but I can be had.
(I didn’t realize when I first picked this movie that so many of the quotes had bad language and I’m not using those! Sometimes I forget about that when I haven’t watched the movie in a while!)

3. “What is it you want, Mary? What do you want?”

It’s a Wonderful Life, first guessed by Debi

4. “Kid, there’s something I ought to tell you. I never shot anybody before.”

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, first guessed by Lynne

5. “You brought music back into the house. I had forgotten.”

The Sound of Music, first guessed by Lauren

6. “Then let us be rid of it… once and for all. Come on, _______ I can’t carry it for you… but I can carry you.”

Lord of the Rings Return of the King, first guessed by Stacy

7. “How can you forgive this guy for standing you up and not forgive me for this tiny little thing like putting you out of business.”

You’ve Got Mail, first guessed by Lauren

8. “I will find you. No matter how long it takes, no matter how far, I will find you.”
Last of the Mohicans, first guessed by Stacy (and where were you on this one LIz, I know you SO know this one!)

9. “Who was that shape in the shadows? Whose is that face in the mask?”
Phantom of the Opera, first guessed by Lauren

10. “As you wish.”
The Princess Bride, first guessed by Stacy

Have fun! Leave your guesses in the comments (no looking up!) and I’ll be back later to update as they are guessed.
Update: #2 was probably from the 80’s
Oooh, I also forgot to see if anyone recognized what movie the title is from!

I like toast and jam

Yesterday while going through some papers to toss I found something that was a bit interesting to me. I get newsletters every couple of months from the county home extension office and a paragraph about colored bread ties caught my attention. I don’t buy a lot of sliced bread anymore unless it’s 100% whole wheat and recently I learned that some of it has high fructose corn syrup in it so that’s just about halted me from buying it at all! But here’s a snippet of what I read:

When you go to buy bread in the grocery store, have you ever wondered which is the freshest? Did you know that bread is delivered fresh to the stores five days a week? Each day has a different color twist tie. They are: Monday=blue, Tuesday=green, Thursday=red, Friday=white and Saturday=yellow. The colors also go alphabetically by color to make it easy to remember.”

I poked around online a bit and most of what I found seemed to agree with this. I don’t know why but for some reason it’s never occurred to me why bread had different colored ties! So if you are shopping on Thursday you wouldn’t want a loaf with a white tie because it would be almost a week old. Some stores may have a chart at the back of the counter for the delivery person so they know which ones to put to the front. However I also read that bread isn’t kept on the shelves long anyway and this system just makes it easier for them to know at a glance which ones are older and need to come off. You’ve probably all heard this before but somehow this is sorta new to me!
We don’t use bread as much anymore and I think I’m going to look into a bread machine this week so that maybe I can make some that doesn’t have that corn syrup stuff in it! I’ve been looking at labels and it seems to be in everything so I’m on a quest to see if I can eliminate it as much as possible.
So do you buy bread and do you check the tie to see how fresh it is?

let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

Not a big deal for most of you but in the South snow is almost always a big event for us, and in March even! We got snow on Friday afternoon into the evening, maybe an inch or 2 in all. I didn’t think it would stick when it first started coming down but after an hour or so I realized that we would have it for at least last night. It wasn’t quite enough to play in but it was enough for me to take pictures.

The streets and sidewalks didn’t have any, so nothing there to have to clean off. It’s melting off fairly quickly today; the sun came up and the temp is now above freezing so it won’t take long. Kinda fun while it lasted!

I got to thinking after I posted some pictures of our TX kids that I didn’t have any new ones from my daughter in NC. So I poked around in flickr and found that she had put up a few new ones but hadn’t emailed me about them! So I’m using one today……because don’t I wish I could have some SASSY boots like these! I don’t think I’ve gotten to see them on Katelyn in person but I like them in the picture……

My kids in Texas emailed me some new pictures. The little ones had school pictures done and they’re just so cute I had to share! And I was very excited to see Ava Clair in her red jumper I made a few months ago, I think it turned out great & I’m glad the girls are being able to use them. Trent told me on the phone that she wanted her hair fixed just like this for the picture and then she promptly took it down afterwards. I’m putting them on the extended page in case they are slow to load…..

We gave a dinner party over the weekend for a friend getting married soon and a marriage blessing was part of it as well. It’s a time we set aside to give a charge to the couple to remain faithful and committed to each other and to pray for them and ask God’s blessing on their upcoming marriage. Lots of times when we’ve had these parties my hubby has been in charge of doing the blessing, he did this time as well. And in his talk he used a song lyric! How did he know I’d like that! He didn’t because he barely knows I have a blog and never reads it. But he used the one I’m using today and told them that they would encounter trouble in marriage! Haven’t we all. But that their job from now on would be to fall in love with each other….”the next time I fall in love it will be with you”.
Click through if you want to see some of the pictures.

I, I who have no one….”

I think I’m coming up dry most days for something to post; I have no new cute kid pictures, haven’t thrown anything more out or bought anything and none of that is really interesting anyway! I think deep thoughts sometimes but it never translates well when I try to write it down. Shawna emailed me a little meme thing a few weeks ago so I decided to pick part of the questions to post today!

1. What is your occupation? I taught school for about 1 1/2 years before I had kids, well it was kindergarten so I guess that doesn’t count much. After that I was lucky enough to be a stay at home mom with everything that goes with it, and I’ve always said I might have done more chauffeuring than anything else!

2. What color are your socks right now? Most times I only wear them if I’m walking and then I wear really short white ankle ones; occasionally I wear some dark ones that are a little longer with my boots.

3. What are you listening to right now? the tinkling of my wind chimes and a ticking clock nearby

4. What was the last thing that you ate? a bowl of Cheerios for breakfast

5. Can you drive a stick shift? I hope I still remember how! If I had to I guess I could but I really prefer not to….my first car was a stick shift VW bug but I haven’t driven one in forever…..does a riding lawnmower count? I rode it for years but thankfully got to give that up about 5 years ago!

6. If you were a crayon, what color would you be? how about green!

7. Last person you spoke to on the phone? that was probably Stacy when she called last night

8. Favorite drink? I drink water almost all the time, hardly ever anything else. But it’s a nice splurge to have a cappuccino or coffee sometimes with flavored creamer.

9. What is your favorite sport to watch? I don’t watch sports much on tv at all, I loved going to all my kids basketball games and track meets when they were in school. I used to LOVE to watch Every.Single.Game of the Atlanta Braves that came on but I burned my family out on that big time. I love to watch March Madness, and the big stuff like the Olympics or occasionally the Super Bowl.

10. Have you ever dyed your hair? LOL! Umm, yes…………I hope lots of you have. 😆

11. Pets? We are down to one outside cat, Arthur, who technically belongs to Elizabeth but she has never taken him her with her! We did have the BEST dog on the face of the earth, Caleb our black lab and wonder dog…..but sadly, he disappeared a few years ago and we just haven’t had much interest in starting over. Having pets is like having kids and lots of work!

12. What kind of pie? Key Lime! And of course anything chocolate, like chocolate chess pie, yum.

13. What was your favorite toy as a child? Well, I have this whole thing of not really being able to remember anything from my childhood so this one is hard for me. My first reaction was to say a book because I read all the time. But maybe I played with Barbie dolls some and I think maybe played board games………I was sorta an inside girl!

14. How many states have you lived in? I have lived in Mississippi my whole life! Sad maybe. Unless I can count that hubby and I lived one summer in Colorado while going through some training with Campus Crusade for Christ, but then we moved back here!

15. What is on the floor of your closet? Lots of shoes that need to be organized, some shoe boxes and a crate or 2 that’s full of pictures I need to start organizing! Hubby’s side has a few shoes, a golf club, hunting paraphernalia and a laundry basket.
And a few days ago these were all over the floor of my closet, from doing a little cleaning out:

Kudos to you if you read all the way to the end! Pretend bonus points for all of you and any of you that know who sang the oldie that I got my title from.
We’re giving a marriage blessing and dinner party tomorrow so hopefully I can get a few pictures from that. I hope y’all have a great weekend!
