they’re goin’ North, the rush is on

It’s been a bit of a whirlwind around here the past few days. We spent the weekend in Jackson celebrating my dad’s birthday, then helping son pack some of his stuff to bring home and store for a while. He came in Sunday evening with another truck load of furniture and belongings for us to unload yesterday. He’s just about completely moved out and is probably sleeping on the floor or couch; going to take two exams this week and then he’s off! David is going to Alaska for the summer! I think it’s going to be a big adventure for him, he should get to see some cool places but it feels really far away. He lives about 80-90 miles from us now though and we don’t see him that often so maybe it won’t be much different. There are 8 of them from around here, all friends, that will work there together. They’ll be tour directors for a travel company doing land tours on a bus or maybe trains too. His birthday will happen while he’s gone so we got him a camera this weekend as his gift, because I figured if you’re going someplace fun you should have a camera to document it! I’ve also told him to send us pictures regularly but I’m not so sure he’ll follow up on that part!
This was probably my last time to see him for a while so we took a few pictures……

(with a giant snickerdoodle in his mouth!)

We’ve never been to Alaska but I’ve always thought it would be a fun place to see…..don’t know whether we could work it out for this summer or not but I hope to live vicariously through his pictures!

So cool. Alaska. I wished I would have done something like that. I hope Madison and Miller do. I think it’s good for them. How wonderful.

He didn’t care that you put this on your blog? He has his own, you know, LOL! I know he’s going to have a great summer, it will be awesome for him. Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I totally wish we could go, we’ve looked at cruises and stuff for years, but just haven’t coughed up the dough to go. It’s pretty expensive.

Great pictures, that David is almost as photogenic as you are!

I have heard that Alaska is breathtakingly beautiful. Hopefully he will honor your request for photos. I would love to see them!

That song you used for your title. Johnny Horton?

Oh man, I just can’t quite wrap my head around the idea of going months without seeing my kids…but I guess the day will come someday.

What a cool adventure he’s undertaking! My parents drove to Alaska a couple years ago, and had a ball! Something I’d love to do one day, but probably it will never happen. If your son comes through with the pictures, you’d better share!

Isn’t it great for these young kids to get to do so much with their lives? I know it doesn’t feel so great to us – we miss them so much – but what wonderful opportunities for them!
The camera was a great idea!

That sounds like a wonderful adventure! I hope he has a fantastic summer!

Oh, you MUST go while he is there. You can have him take you on one of his tours. What a great vacation that would be. We thought of the cruise/train thing for our 25th anniversary. But the northeast won out instead. Someday perhaps.

Alaska is just georgeous… he is in for a real treat and what an adventure to enjoy for the summer (and make money at the same time). I hope you get to visit while he’s there. That would be a blessing indeed!

That is an adventure! That is somewhere I wouldn’t mind touring!
