Last week my son was getting ready to come home from college for Christmas break. He ran an errand for me on Thursday and then did some shopping for himself also. He went back to the dorm to finish packing and loading his truck; most everyone else was already gone. Coming back out of the dorm to drive home he noticed that the driver’s side had been hit and dented in! Hit and run! He thinks he would have noticed it if it had happened earlier in the day because it is on the driver’s side of the vehicle but he didn’t see it then. But did notice it as soon as he came out of the dorm later in the day to drive home. He called to tell us and we told him to get a report from campus police for insurance purposes. He’s done all that and we’ve had adjusters and appraisers come and look and then talk to hubby about it all. It is so annoying right here at Christmas time to have your vehicle hit and then someone drive off and tell you no information. Hubby said it was probably because they were uninsured in the first place; someone else suggested that if it was a college student they might have been too afraid of what their parents would say. Here are a couple of pics:

I couldn’t get it photographed very well…..I probably should have asked the adjuster if I could have his pictures! I don’t think the pictures show up all the damage to it very well, and it has some white paint on it that we supposed came from the other vehicle.

This is from another angle, looks like some piece up inside has been knocked loose too and the black part around the tire is loose as well:

I don’t understand why people get in such a hurry that they would do this, if it did happen at a mall somewhere. David thinks it happened on campus because he thinks he would have noticed it earlier in the day when he was out at the mall. There were very few people on campus at the time, so it seems they would have had more than enough room to back out of a spot instead of hitting him. Unless they were in a huge hurry and didn’t look, or were too afraid of what might happen. Surely they wouldn’t have done it on purpose. I also find it hard to believe that they don’t have some damage to their vehicle somewhere! But of course, trying to find that would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. The adjuster said it looked like to him someone had backed into him or turned into a parking space and hit it that way. I think it’s all ready to get taken to be fixed…..but I think hubby is having second thoughts! He’s wondering about just pushing/hammering/knocking it back out himself! I don’t know about that, have no idea if that can be done and there would still be scratches there too I guess. So, whatcha ya think? Fix it? What about the expert opinion of Tim the tool man!
I’m glad he wasn’t in it and glad only the truck got “run over”! I know it could have been worse but it sure is annoying!

Ugh, what a pain. It’s in such a bad spot, right there at the gas tank. That’s the only thing I would be worried about. 🙁

  2. Gail Says:

Yeah, I think they are going to look at that spot by the tank and evaluate again. One person suggested that maybe they could buff it, said they’d had that done to their car before.

The only other words of this song I know are “…as for me and grandma, we believe.” That is a pretty good dent, but it does look like it could just be pulled out. I don’t know how but it looks that way to me, oh car expert that I am! 🙂 Sorry this happened. Never fun.

Sorry about your car. But that song never fails to make me laugh!!

I suspect you’re right – the other driver wasn’t insured and fled because of all the ramifications. But I’d say if your insurance will pay to have it repaired, have it done professionally.

What a pity this happened. It’s happened to me once – my car was sideswiped while it was parked in front of my house. It makes you feel so violated, doesn’t it?

Ah well. There’s no point in dwelling on it. You’ll never know who did it and you might just as well get it fixed, move on and try to forget about it. I can imagine how upset your son was, though. Not a very nice Christmas present.

Speaking of Christmas. Merry Christmas to you and your family, Gail. What a pleasure it’s been to meet you this year.

This is so frustrating. I’m sorry it happened. There is never a good time of year for this type of thing, but especially around the holiday’s. That double stinks.
