We did several hikes while on vacation in Colorado and on that Monday afternoon after our wrangler’s breakfast hike, we took a trip with a group from the ranch up to a place called Cottonwood Pass. We drove about 25 miles away up to about 12,000 feet for snowsliding on a patch of snow still there and some of us hiked up even higher to the top of the Continental Divide. You can’t quite tell from this picture but you had to go up on one of the 2 trails behind us to reach the patch of snow. Trent packed one of the slides on his back for he and Grayson to slide on.
Click below for rest of entry:
Don is at the bottom of the patch of snow and you can just make out the road way below him, where we had parked and hiked to this point.
Jeremy, carrying Katelyn in a pack, Kathryn and David went on to the top of the divide and I decided to go as well. It was pretty steep in spots and you had to bend over and kind of go up using your hands and feet to pull up in spots. I knew that the guys might do a hike later that week that I probably wouldn’t get to go on so I wanted to make sure I did this one to the top. Since we live at like 5 ft. below sea level here, it was hard to breathe at times when you are higher than 12,000 ft! Don & Liz watched Trent & Gray for a while and didn’t start as soon as we had so they didn’t make it quite as far as the rest of us and I think Liz was sorta impressed that I made it! 🙂 Hard to really get a good perspective from this shot but it shows part of the rocky, steep part of the trail to the top (Jeremy & Kat going up)
David & Gail at top and Kathryn, Jeremy & Katelyn:
The pile of rocks you see by us standing at the top, you can barely see when you are at the bottom of the trail looking back up. I took a shot from the bottom & it doesn’t show up good in the pic but I drew an arrow in over it so you can sort of see where we were at the top:
Square dancing was Monday night but not too many of us could get into it for very long!
Kat, Liz & I did a 2 mile pre-breakfast hike Wednesday morning & then our babysitter for Katelyn came so all 6 of us could go horseback riding. It was a 6 mile trail ride to a lunch cookout. I think we climbed & wound our way up a mountain a little ways for the first mile or so and then it was through some wooded areas and open looking pastures to the destination. They cooked hamburgers, beans, chips, cookies, etc. and served us again on old tin plates! It was an interesting & fun time.
Don saddling up at the corral:
On the first part of the trail winding up through the mountains:
Out in the open part toward the end of the ride (Don is toward the front of the line)
My kiddos and then us after the ride, with some of our horses:
That was a lot of fun! Ok I’m probably making this way too long but I feel like I’m leaving so much stuff out…..so check back later for another part and any miscellaneous pics I might want to put in!

No, it’s not too much! I love the pictures and reading about what all you guys did. Lots to see and do, and a part of the country I’ve never seen and might never get to see that way. So definitely continue the travel dialogue!
Great pictures and I love the bandana on David’s head 🙂 Oh, and the rest of you might not have enjoyed square dancing, but Grayson sure looked like he did!

I would love to see a photo of YOU riding a horse.
was your behind sore?! Did you like it? I guess your horse just walked, no running?
Grayson looked like he liked to dance !!
