We camped a good bit when the kids were younger; mostly because it was a way we could take long trips and see lots of the country without spending too much money! And because it gave everyone some different experiences and gave us time to be together as a family. We didn’t eat out very often because it was expensive to feed a family of 6 while travelling. When I looked at pictures I think I also remembered that it was a lot of work too! So much stuff to be packed, food to be bought & stored, setting up camp. Just cooking a meal was sometimes an effort and you don’t realize sometimes what we take for granted in our houses, like hot running water to shower and wash dishes with!
This is another picture of our van that we used for so many of those camping trips. We used a car top carrier to load a lot of the camping gear in, plus whatever wouldn’t fit in the back of the van. This was when we had camped in Yellowstone and the Tetons the first year we had the van. Boy there is a lot of stuff on the ground & the picnic table to go in that car and the tent hadn’t even been taken apart yet!
We would often do a lot of hiking and sightseeing, and whatever else appealed to us depending on where we were. But when I looked at this picture, I think it didn’t take much to entertain us sometimes! This was in the Tetons and I can remember us throwing these rocks but I can’t quite recall why……just something fun to do maybe. I think one of the kids must have started it and all the rest of us got in on it eventually. Hubby must have taken this picture since he’s not in this one.
Fun trips and fun times…….even so I’m not really that anxious to go camping again! I think our tent finally gave out after years of use & I’m glad that we’ve had that experience already!

Looks like fun to me, but probably something I would have rather done when I was younger. Going camping is another one of those things I never did growing up (lack of childhood and all). Of course, no hot shower and sleeping on the ground with bugs does NOT appeal to me at all!
Great pictures! I love seeing all of these older ones. Are you in the picture throwing rocks, between the girls?
